Project Description

The Envira Amazonia Project is a payment for ecosystem services forest conservation project, otherwise known as a Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+) project, protecting nearly 500,000 acres (200,000 hectares) of tropical rainforest.

The Envira Amazonia Project is mitigating the release of more than 12.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, while also preserving the habitat for an extraordinary amount of biodiversity and directly benefiting local communities.

The project activities include undertaking a forest carbon inventory, modeling regional deforestation and land-use patterns, and mitigating deforestation pressures by utilizing payments for the Project’s ecosystem services, along with ongoing monitoring of the climate, community and biodiversity impacts of the Project. In addition to voluntarily foregoing plans to convert the forests to a large-scale cattle ranch, the landowners are implement numerous activities to assist local communities and mitigate deforestation pressures such as: offering agricultural extension training courses; building community bathrooms; building an onsite headquarters with a small pharmacy and health clinic; facilitating dentist visits; and eventually granting land tenure to local communities and establishing alternative economic activities including commercializing the collection of medicinal plants and açaí.

The Envira Amazonia Project has achieved validation and verification to the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standards (CCBS) with Triple Gold Level Distinction for the Project’s exceptional biodiversity and community benefits, along with the Project’s incorporation of climate change mitigation activities. In fact, the Envira Amazonia Project is one of the largest REDD+ projects in the world and one of only a handful of REDD+ projects to be validated and verified to the CCBS with Triple Gold Distinction.

The Envira Amazonia Project is being financed, designed and implemented by CarbonCo and results in net positive climate, community and biodiversity benefits.
